De volta à cidade natal, o casal que decide morar junto tem um grande desafio: viver em harmonia com seus seis filhos — três de Carol e três de Frank — sob o mesmo teto. O único problema é que os filhos de Carol odeiam os filhos de Frank e vice-versa.
Agora, o casal também precisa lidar com as diferenças. Frank é muito desleixado, enquanto que Carol é extremamente organizada. Assim, passo a passo, eles passam a enfrentar os seus problemas e suas diferenças com a ajuda das outras famílias e amigos.
“Step by Step” foi cancelada pela ABC no final da sexta temporada. A rede CBS resgatou a série e produziu a 7ª e última temporada.
O personagem Mark Foster, inicialmente, foi interpretado pelo ator Jarrett Lennon. Após a gravação do piloto, os produtores trocaram de ator, escalando Christopher Castile. É por isso que na abertura da 1ª temporada vemos um menino de cabelo escuro junto com os outros personagens da família.
